Lee Aronsohn comments
The co-creator of “Two and a Half Men” apologized Monday for being a douche when he suggested female comics and their anatomy were taking over our TV sets.
Lee Aronsohn ’s mea culpa followed intense Internet backlash over his sexist comments at the Toronto Screenwriting Conference.
“We are approaching peak vagina on television, the point of labia saturation,” Aronsohn said at the conference Sunday, according to the Hollywood Reporter. “Enough, ladies. I get it. You have periods.”
Aronsohn reportedly applauded female comics including Whitney Cummings , Chelsea Handler and Tina Fey for their outspoken voices, but said he wasn’t a fan of Cummings’ two shows, “Whitney” and “Two Broke Girls.”
He also declined to apologize for the regular portrayals of women as bimbos on “Two and a Half Men.”
“Screw it,” he told the Toronto conference, according to the Reporter. “We’re centering the show on two very damaged men. What makes men damaged? Sorry, it’s women. I never got my heart broken by a man.”
Aronsohn, 59, eventually tried to backpedal on Twitter, saying he made a career out of jokes about male body parts.
“Women, please look up ‘irony,’ ” he implored his critics on Monday.
But he didn’t get off the hook without some bites.
Cummings told the Daily News’ Nancy Dillon that she accepted Aronsohn’s apology, adding that it wasn’t the first time a man commented on her vagina “and then felt the need to apologize quickly thereafter.”
She said “Men” also left her with the distinct impression that men liked vaginas.
“You came out of one. You probably spend lot of your time trying to get into one. This is kind of a mixed message,” she said. “Had I known vaginas were so offensive and appalling to men, I certainly wouldn’t be talking about them.”
Popular comic Jen Kirkman declared a Twitter “fatwa” and blasted Aronsohn through a barrage of messages about her menstrual cycle.
"I'm scared. Just looked out my window and vaginas are storming the streets with sitcom ideas! Choking on estrogen inhalation," read one of Kirkman's tweets.
"Um Lee, women are 51% of the population and a coveted demographic for advertisers. What are you thinking," tweeted actress Martha Plimpton.
“Lee Aronsohn’s twitter handle is @bennyace if your overexposed lady parts want to send him a message,” tweeted former New Yorker TV critic Nancy Franklin .
Aronsohn later deleted his Twitter post, claiming “irony” and posted his apology. He did not respond to a call seeking comment by deadline.
